PM Narendra Modi Inaugurates Wildlife Rescue and Conservation Centre 'Vantara' in Gujarat
In a significant step toward wildlife preservation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Vantara Wildlife Rescue, Rehabilitation, and Conservation Centre in Gujarat. The state-of-the-art facility is dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, and conserving endangered species, serving as a sanctuary for over 2,000 species and more than 150,000 rescued animals, many of which are threatened or endangered.
During his visit, PM Modi took the opportunity to explore the various facilities at Vantara, interacting closely with several rehabilitated species. The prime minister spent time engaging with a range of animals, showcasing a deep connection with the wildlife under care at the centre.
One of the highlights of the visit was PM Modi's tour of the advanced wildlife hospital housed within Vantara. The hospital is equipped with cutting-edge medical technology, including MRI and CT scan machines, intensive care units (ICUs), and a wide range of specialized departments. These departments cover fields such as Wildlife Anesthesia, Cardiology, Nephrology, Endoscopy, Dentistry, and Internal Medicine, ensuring comprehensive care for the rescued animals.
The prime minister also had a hands-on experience by feeding and playing with several animal cubs, including Asiatic Lion cubs, a White Lion cub, a Clouded Leopard cub — a rare and endangered species — and a Caracal cub. Notably, the White Lion cub fed by PM Modi was born at Vantara after its mother was rescued and brought to the centre for rehabilitation.
The Caracal, once abundant across India, is now becoming an increasingly rare sight. At Vantara, a dedicated breeding program is in place to ensure the preservation of the species, with plans to release them back into the wild after their rehabilitation in captivity.
A key moment during the visit occurred when PM Modi observed an Asiatic Lion undergoing an MRI in the hospital’s state-of-the-art diagnostic room. He also visited the operation theatre, where a Leopard was being treated for life-threatening injuries sustained after being hit by a vehicle on a nearby highway. The leopard had been rescued and brought to Vantara for urgent care.
The centre’s commitment to animal welfare is reflected in its efforts to provide environments that closely mimic the natural habitats of its residents. Among the notable conservation initiatives at Vantara are dedicated programs focused on the Asiatic Lion, Snow Leopard, and the One-Horned Rhinoceros, among other species at risk.
The establishment of Vantara marks a major milestone in wildlife conservation in India, as the centre continues its crucial work to protect and rehabilitate endangered species while fostering an environment of care and recovery.
